Set against the backdrop of 1960s Wales, Gurnam moves his family—his wife Lakhwinder, their daughter Avani, and sons Nick, Manny, and Sukh—from the dangerous streets of Southall to start anew. As the family adjusts to their new life, Avani begins a courageous journey of self-discovery, finding her path to embracing her Sikh faith despite her father's disapproval. With quiet determination, she decides to wear a turban, symbolizing her commitment to her identity.
Meanwhile, her brother Nick, inspired by the rising tide of social change, joins a political protest campaign supporting the Race Relations Act, confronting the racism that permeates their new community. Their mother, Lakhwinder, struggles to create a loving and stable home amid an increasingly hostile and intolerant environment. Tragically, after years of working in an asbestos factory, she succumbs to illness, leaving a void
that plunges Gurnam into a downward spiral of grief and alcoholism as he tries to escape the trauma of his past and the pain of losing his wife.
As the family's world threatens to unravel, Avani's journey becomes the heart of the story. Her love for a local Welsh boy, Harri, and her growing sense of self push her toward a profound realization. In the face of personal and societal challenges, she fully embraces her Sikh identity and faith, symbolized by the turban she now wears with pride. Standing at the crossroads of her past and future, Avani's choices will not only define her destiny but may also determine the fate of her entire family.
